The Use of AI and Robotics in Security: The Rise and the Downfall for Human Personnel

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics are rapidly changing the security industry. As someone who has closely followed technology for many years, I see both the tremendous benefits and the potential downsides these advancements bring.

From my perspective, AI and robotics should not replace security officers they should enhance them.



The Rise of AI in Security

AI has become one of the most valuable tools available to modern security professionals. Technologies such as intelligent CCTV systems, autonomous ground robots, drones, access control, facial recognition, and real-time analytics allow security teams to perform duties that were nearly impossible just a decade ago.

Instead of assigning four or more officers to patrol a large industrial facility, warehouse, or residential community, today's technology can allow one or two highly trained officers to monitor the same property with assistance from AI-powered cameras and robotic patrol units.

Some of the advantages include:

  • Continuous 24/7 monitoring without fatigue.

  • Faster detection of suspicious activity.

  • Patrols in hazardous or high-risk areas before officers enter.

  • Better documentation of incidents using AI-assisted video analysis.

  • Reduced exposure of officers to dangerous confrontations or extreme weather conditions.

  • Increased coverage of large properties with fewer personnel.

Rather than replacing officers, AI can serve as a force multiplier, allowing security professionals to focus on decision-making instead of routine observation.


The Current Reality

Although the technology already exists, relatively few security companies are taking full advantage of it.

Many agencies—especially smaller ones—lack the financial resources, technical knowledge, or personnel needed to deploy AI systems effectively. Others continue to follow security practices that have changed very little over the past several decades.

Implementing AI is not as simple as purchasing a robot or installing cameras. It requires:

  • Significant investment.

  • Proper planning.

  • Reliable network infrastructure.

  • Cybersecurity protections.

  • Specialized training.

  • Personnel who understand both physical security and technology.

For many organizations, those requirements represent a major operational expense.


The Downfall for Human Personnel

The biggest concern surrounding AI is its effect on employment.

Security officers who choose not to learn new technologies may eventually find themselves at a disadvantage. The industry is evolving, and the officers who understand robotics, AI systems, surveillance technology, and remote operations will become increasingly valuable.

Based on the current pace of technological advancement, I believe that between 2028 and 2030 we will begin seeing much wider adoption of AI-assisted security operations.

This does not mean security officers will disappear.

Instead, their role will evolve.

Future security professionals may spend less time walking repetitive patrol routes and more time:

  • Supervising robotic patrol units.

  • Managing AI-generated alerts.

  • Investigating incidents.

  • Responding only when human judgment is required.

  • Operating from centralized command centers.

One highly trained officer may eventually oversee multiple properties remotely while robotic systems handle routine patrols.


Human Judgment Still Matters

Despite the impressive capabilities of AI, technology still lacks one critical element: human judgment.

AI cannot fully understand context, emotion, ethics, or the countless unpredictable situations security officers encounter every day.

Technology can identify a threat.

A trained professional decides how to respond.

That distinction will remain essential for years to come.


My Personal Rule

As someone who embraces technology, I follow two principles:

  1. Do not rely entirely on technology.

  2. Always master the fundamentals first.

If technology fails due to a power outage, network failure, cyberattack, or equipment malfunction, a well-trained security officer must still know how to perform the job effectively.

Technology should support experience not replace it.


Final Thoughts

The future of security will belong to organizations that successfully combine experienced professionals with advanced technology. AI and robotics are not the enemy of security personnel; they are tools that can make officers safer, more efficient, and more effective.

The officers who continue learning, adapt to new technology, and expand their skills will remain indispensable.

The future is not about humans versus AI.

It is about humans working alongside AI and robotics.
