Security Officers Abuse

I’ve worked in the security industry for decades, and throughout that time, I’ve witnessed many instances where security officers were mistreated — not by their employers, but by the clients they were assigned to serve.

Fortunately, I’ve never personally experienced such treatment — perhaps due to my demeanor (who knows?) — but others haven’t been as lucky. In some cases, officers were spoken to as if they were servants or made to feel like they didn’t belong.

What many people don’t realize is that security officers come from diverse backgrounds. Some are highly educated, well-traveled, and bring a wealth of experience to the job. This is why I’m a firm believer in mutual respect — it goes a long way.

Unfortunately, some clients seem to go on power trips when interacting with employees — not just security officers, but others as well. They speak down to people simply because of the uniform or the role, forgetting that everyone deserves dignity on the job.

If, for any reason, a client feels an officer isn’t a good fit, there are respectful and professional ways to handle it: request a reassignment or clearly communicate the expectations for the post. Precision and respect go much further than criticism or condescension."
